General Generator FAQs
How often should the oil be changed in the unit?
The oil should be changed once a year for the health of the unit.
How long does it take to install a generator?
The actual installation usually takes 1–2 days. We’ll guide you through every step.
What size generator do I need for my home or business?
The right generator size depends on what you need to power. For most homes, a 14–22kW generator can handle essential circuits or whole-home coverage. For businesses, we’ll calculate your load and recommend a system that keeps critical operations running. We offer free on-site assessments to make sure you get exactly what you need.
What’s the difference between a standby generator and a portable generator?
A standby generator is permanently installed and turns on automatically when the power goes out. A portable generator needs to be manually started and plugged in. Standby systems offer greater convenience, safety, and power capacity — and they're our specialty at Andrus Power Solutions.
How much does a whole-house generator cost, including installation?
Installed home standby generators vary, depending on size, fuel source, and site conditions. We provide free, no-pressure quotes tailored to your property and needs. Financing is also available, including 0% interest options.
Do I need to clear snow around my generator?
Yes. Snow and ice should be cleared away from your generator so airflow is not blocked. Restricted airflow can cause the unit to fault or fail to run when you need it most. Always keep the area around the generator clear and follow the manufacturer's clearance guidelines.
Do you offer financing for generator purchases and installation?
Yes — we offer affordable monthly payment options through Synchrony and other financing partners. Some plans include 0% interest for up to 25 months, helping you get protected before the next outage.
How often do standby generators need maintenance?
We recommend two maintenance visits per year — one major and one minor. Our team provides Preventative Maintenance Agreements to keep your generator running reliably year-round.
Can I install a generator myself or do I need a licensed electrician?
In Massachusetts, standby generator installation must be performed by licensed electricians and often requires plumbing for fuel lines. Andrus Power Solutions is fully licensed and insured for turnkey installation, ensuring safety and code compliance.
Will a generator increase my home’s value or insurance costs?
Many homebuyers see standby generators as a premium feature, especially in areas prone to outages. Some insurers may offer discounts for having a backup power source. We’re happy to provide documentation for your insurer if needed.
What happens if the power goes out while I’m not home?
Your standby generator will turn on automatically within seconds of an outage — even if you're not home. That means your fridge, sump pump, heating system, and more will stay on without you lifting a finger.
What kind of fuel does a standby generator use — propane, natural gas, or diesel?
Most of our residential generators run on propane or natural gas, while commercial systems may use diesel. We’ll help determine what works best based on availability and your property setup.
Can I plant shrubs or landscaping near my generator?
Only if proper clearance is maintained. Landscaping should never block airflow or prevent service access. A general rule is to keep at least 3 to 5 feet of clearance around the unit. If you're unsure whether your current or planned landscaping is too close, we're happy to take a look.
Can I build a shed, fence, or enclosure around my generator?
Not without proper clearance. Generators require open space for airflow, safe operation, and service access — typically at least 3 to 5 feet, depending on the unit, nearby doors and windows, and local code requirements. Before adding any fencing or enclosure, have the placement reviewed to ensure the unit remains safe and accessible.
Will a generator work with my solar set up?
It depends on your solar configuration. If your solar system includes a battery backup, a generator can work in tandem with it to keep your home powered around the clock. If you have a standard solar setup without battery storage, the generator and solar system will operate independently — the generator kicks in during an outage while the solar system is offline for safety reasons. We're happy to review your current setup and recommend the best backup power solution.
What brand of generators do you sell?
We sell all major generator brands. For residential customers, Generac and Kohler are the most popular choices — both are industry leaders with proven reliability, strong warranty support, and factory-trained service networks. We'll help you choose the right brand and size for your home or business based on your needs and budget.
